Recyclable paper wine bottle reduces carbon footprint and shipping costs

Normally, we like to enjoy our wine from a bottle. When it comes from a box, there’s a certain impression that it might be cheap wine and some “connoisseurs” will probably not be caught dead drinking wine like that. But as we’re looking for more sustainable packaging for a lot of products, we can probably consider having wine not exactly from a bottle.

Designer: Frugalpac

The Frugal Bottle is not exactly box packaging but it is made from recyclable paper. The more interesting thing about this though is that instead of a box shape, you get one that is shaped like an actual bottle. It can fit 750mL of liquid is like a standard wine bottle. But while regular bottles can be recycled as well, this has six times lower carbon footprint while still letting wine manufacturers have 360 degree branding.

The main point of this kind of bottle is that it is designed to be recycled since its outer surface is made from 94% recyclable paperboard. There’s a polyethelene pouch inside to hold the liquid. It’s also easy to dispose of it after you’ve finished off the wine. There’s a demarcated spot on the shoulder and you just need to press it to split the seam and get it ready for disposal or to bring it to the recycling center.

Another benefit to this kind of packaging is that it’s way lighter than the glass wine bottle. In fact, it’s five times lighter so that means your shipping costs will be drastically affected. I’m not sure if there’s an effect on the taste of the wine with this packaging. But the fact that brands like Cantina Goccia have adopted this may mean that it is acceptable for manufacturers and maybe even the sometimes snobbish connoisseurs.
