Rewear Chair turns clothes airing into a stylish and sustainable habit

It’s a good thing I live alone because if I had roommates or housemates, they would be appalled at one habit that I have. I leave several pieces of clothing lying around, on my bed, on the sofa, or even in random chairs. These are clothes that I have worn briefly and plan to use again so I need to “air them out”. I tell myself that I’m saving the earth and my clothes as I’m lessening the use of water and detergent with the constant rewashing but there should be a better or at least a more organized way for this.

The Rewear Chair, a collaboration between creative design studio Uncommon and eco-friendly cleaning brand Ecover, is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can help us do just that. Whether you’re interested in sustainability, love innovative furniture, or are simply looking for a unique conversation piece, this piece of furniture is worth a closer look. At first, it seems to just be a modern piece that would fit seamlessly into any space. But the reality is that it’s an innovative approach to not just organizing your room but also making a statement about reducing the environmental footprint of an activity like laundry.

Designer: Uncommon and Ecover

At its most basic, this is a chair that you can hang and air your clothes that you plan to wear again without washing it first. It has extendable arms where you can hang at least a week’s worth of items that can be reworn, and not in a messy way but in a stylish manner. Even the materials used are sustainable with windfelled cedarwood used as the main material because of its natural deodorising qualities. The fixtures are made from reclaimed ash while natural beeswax is used for the joints. Natural felt insert is also infused with cedar oil so the clothes can be naturally deodorized.

This is actually a centerpiece of Ecover’s broader sustainability initiative to raise awareness of the bad effects of overwashing on the planet. This includes a media and PR campaign, like spreading tips through printed clothing tags on lower-temperature washes, extending wear, and no-wash habits. They want to spread the message of more mindful clothes washing to reduce waste and extend the life of our garments.

The Rewear Chair turns mundane laundry routines into meaningful moments. It stands as a testament to design as a catalyst for sustainable change and proves that even small behavioral tweaks, when paired with thoughtful design, can have outsized environmental benefits. So yes, I’ll probably still leave clothes around my space but if I had something like this, at least it would look like a stylish and earth-saving mess.
