Van den Berg reused pegboards, hooks, and other elements from FREITAG Stores to create table, pendant, and floor lamps. Each design features bright truck tarp offcuts—the same recycled material used in FREITAG’s iconic bags. The collection also includes “Truck Crash” wall artworks, made by flattening toy trucks with a hydraulic press. The process references Van den Berg’s earlier Car Crash series and celebrates the brand’s roots in road materials.
FREITAG has embraced circular design since 1993, when it began making messenger bags from used truck tarps. Today, the company continues this approach by reusing materials, repairing products, and reclaiming its own interiors.
“At FREITAG, we think in cycles not just for our products, but for everything we do,” says Thomas Wakeford, Creative Director at FREITAG. “Job van den Berg didn’t just recycle the parts—he gave them new character and function. The end of one cycle is always the start of another.”
For Van den Berg, a Design Academy Eindhoven graduate, material exploration is central to his work. “My process always begins with the material itself,” he explains. “The FREITAG parts were fascinating to work with. I wanted to honour their past while turning them into playful, surprising objects.”

The installation demonstrates how design can extend a material’s life beyond its first use. It offers inspiration for designers exploring upcycling, modular reuse, and material storytelling. Both FREITAG and Van den Berg share the same belief: design is not a linear process, but a continuous cycle of transformation.
