white tern inspires Studio Mameluca’s site-specific installation

One Egg – One World is a site-specific installation by Studio Mameluca created for the Imagi-Nature Art Festival at JOALI Maldives, an annual event that combines contemporary art, environmental awareness, and sustainability-focused programming. Presented across the island, the festival brings together large-scale installations, workshops, and immersive experiences that explore the relationship between creativity and ecological responsibility.

The installation draws inspiration from the white tern, a seabird found in the Maldives that is known for laying and nurturing a single egg without constructing a conventional nest. This behavioral characteristic forms the conceptual basis of the project, establishing a connection between the vulnerability of a single egg and the fragility of shared environmental systems.

a single egg becomes spatial metaphor in Maldives installation

The work continues a line of research previously explored by Studio Mameluca through installations examining the material intelligence of birds and their relationship with natural resources. For the Maldives installation, the white tern became the central reference. The bird’s reliance on a single egg serves as a framework for reflecting on interdependence, care, and environmental stewardship. The egg functions as a symbolic element associated with origins, continuity, and the conditions necessary to sustain life.

Through this reference, One Egg – One World examines the relationship between protection and exposure. The absence of a nest, combined with the bird’s dependence on a single offspring, highlights a condition of balance in which survival relies on maintaining connections between organisms and their surroundings. The installation translates these ideas into a spatial intervention that considers the links between life, habitat, and ecological responsibility.
