Collaborations for the planet: how businesses are teaming up for a sustainable future

While sustainability is a brand value on everyone's lips right now, but a business owner friend of mine made a good point: "the most sustainable thing a business can do is not make anything at all." Looking at the fashion industry in Australia alone, more than 6,000 kilograms of textiles head into landfill every 10 minutes. Consumers are more aware than ever, with 60% of people surveyed by Accenture in 2020 making more environmentally friendly, sustainable, or ethical purchases since the start of the pandemic. Brands are responding, but shifting to sustainable practices is a big task, with many moving parts. So, as a means to implement steps toward more sustainable practices, it's no surprise that they're teaming up in order to make change.

Creative collaborations are increasingly happening with sustainability in mind, boosting both awareness & accessibility when it comes to eco friendly brands.  What’s more, brand partnerships & collaborations pose as a fantastic gateway for brands to take steps towards being more sustainable. Take a peek at some of our favourite examples...

Levi's R Collective x Jesse Lee

The R Collective, a brand centred around reusing, repurposing and recycling textile waste, teamed up with Jesse Lee to launch a limited edition “Denim Reimagined” collection. This collaboration aimed to minimize waste & create a fully traceable denim collection that uses scannable garment labels to bring digital education to consumers on how to reduce their fashion footprint with practical tips, taking sustainable fashion beyond the supply chain. A hype was created around Levi’s upcycled denim collection & mentioned by numerous media outlets & platforms resulting in both brands benefiting in promotional reach &  media mentions.

Casetify x The Earth Day Network

The global tech company Casetify teamed up with The Earth Day Network to design the world’s first 100% compostable and biodegradable phone cases in three limited-edition designs. Casetify’s mission to zero aims at reducing virgin plastics & minimising their overall footprint through conscious initiatives. The Earth Day Network benefited from promotional reach to Casetify’s massive community of 2.4 million followers, aligning the brand with coolness & resulting in social community growth. Casetify benefited from media mentions & revenue boost through sales of the 100% compostable cover.

Vogue x Frank Green

Fashion powerhouse, Vogue, teamed up with Australia’s Frank Green to show that for people to buy and use a reusable coffee cup, it needs to look as good as it feels to be ethical. The reusable ceramic coffee cups featured at the Vogue Codes Live 2019 to cut down on single use coffee cups where caffeine & water were supplied in abundance. Both brands benefited from media coverage & promotional reach resulting in both social community growth & increase in sales.
